Chiropody and Podiatry are now effectively synonymous in the U.K. The term “State Registered” may only be used by those who have undergone a three year training course at a recognised college or university. The scope of practice covers work such as corn/callus reduction, nail care etc., through appliance prescription and manufacture, specific advice on problem areas to surgery under local anaesthesia. Therefore Chiropody involves treating acute conditions e.g. trauma, infection in addition to chronic long standing problems. Specialisation includes diabetes, rheumatology, health education, biomechanics, paediatrics, geriatrics, mental health and sports medicine.

Sam Clarke is particularly interested in the field of biomechanical gait analysis. For some people with aches and pains in the foot, leg, knee, hip and back there may be lower limb dysfunction that can be controlled with the use of functional orthoses. These are not arch supports but actually control joint function at any given stage of the gait cycle.

Following detailed measurement and analysis of the various joint angles in the foot and leg individually tailored orthoses can be manufactured that will correctly balance and control the lower limb.
